Update Process

The MTP update process addresses transportation needs within the MPO study area. This includes Bexar County and portions of Comal and Guadalupe counties (click here for a larger PDF study area map).

Every five (5) years the MPO is tasked with updating the MTP for this region. To do this, the MPO meets with members of the general public, transportation stakeholders, elected officials, and other interested parties to identify the transportation needs of the area and to identify a set of community values which are in turn utilized to prioritize projects within the MTP.

This year, the MPO is seeking to go above and beyond the typical update process by initiating discussions within the community regarding future growth patterns. Rather than simply discuss the transportation needs of the area, this update process will explore growth scenarios in order to consider the impacts of land use on transportation needs.

The initial push of the update process, will seek to engage the local community in order to develop a vision for future growth and identify transportation improvements that support this growth pattern. This will allow the MPO to work with their partners towards the implementation of the preferred growth scenario through MTP transportation project priorities, funding decisions, and policy recommendations.

Goals & Objectives
A primary role of the MPO is to ensure the local transportation system remains safe and efficient. To do this, the update process is guided by a set of Goals & Objectives developed with community input during previous update efforts. Goals are grouped into seven (7) categories including:
